RésuméLes auteurs traduisent et commentent un passage du Kitāb al-āṯār al-bāqiya concernant l'hydrologie. Ce passage révèle comment al-Bīrūnī comprenait les régimes fluviaux, le comportement physique de l'eau, et quelques phénomènes naturels spéciaux. Al-Bīrūnī ne se contente pas d'une discussion sur la prévision météorologique et les régimes fluviaux saisonniers du Tigre, de l'Euphrate, de l'Oxus et du Nile. Il défend surtout le principe qu'en l'absence de force externe, l'eau se meut vers le bas. Ce faisant, le savant du Khwarezm touche à (...) l'origine de la salinité des mers et au fonctionnement des machines à syphon hydraulique, et il décrit un phénomène artificiel, qu'il rejette comme résultant d'observations erronées, mais qu'on pourrait reconnaître comme un cas de saut hydraulique. De plus, ce passage renseigne sur ce qu'al-Bīrūnī comprenait du caractère inhabitable des régions sub-équatoriales, de la possibilité du vide, et du cycle de l'eau. (shrink)

This study investigated person perception in respect of variables associated with affect in music following motor synchronization to music. Participants were tested in a task involving stepping with a researcher to the beat of slow or fast music in major or minor mode, following which measures concerning the synchronised partner were collected. Significant effects were found only for the ‘likeability’ measure, modulated by gender, suggesting that variables associated with affect perception in music, such as mode and tempo appear relevant for (...) person perception in a synchronization task in ways that differ for men and women. The results of this ‘proof of concept’ study indicate the need for further research on the effect of motor synchronization based on ecologically valid musical interaction tasks. (shrink)

Infants initiate joint attentional exchanges by pointing relevant referents out to addressees. Over the second year of life, the functional meaning of the pointing gesture develops from declarative (sharing a referent) to informational (giving some information that is new to the addressee). This chapter analyzes this transition in the development of pointing based on experimental evidence about its production contexts and, in particular, of variables concerning the visibility of referents for infant and addressee. Further evidence is reported concerning the association (...) of pointing with vocalizations and visual checking towards the addressee in different temporal sequencing. It is argued that shared attention initiated by pointing plays a pivotal role in the intersection between social cognition and language development. (shrink)

Although the authors take a 'Classical' approach to their subject, the scope of investigation and methods employed should interest all economic theorists. O artigo visa abordar o meio fundamental de como o Estado deve-ser para ser a substancialidade ética, conforme o pensamento do filósofo alemão G. W. F. Hegel. A partir da análise de algumas passagens das obras hegelianas Princípios da Filosofia do Direito e Lições sobre a Filosofia da História Universal, juntamente com o auxílio de alguns comentadores, tentar-se-á primeiramente identificar a vinculação do conceito de Estado com o conceito de História, acompanhando alguns dos movimentos fundamentais e analisando, em seguida, o (...) que é, qual sua origem e o que representa o momento da Constituição apresentado na abordagem ético-política hegeliana. Devidamente compreendida, a Constituição em Hegel possui uma fundamentação ética e não abstrata. Hegel não trata da Constituição escrita, mas da Constituição que é a própria organização do Estado. A base ética que sustenta a Constituição é o “espírito do povo”, que é constituído pelo ethos, origem, história, costumes e hábitos de um povo. A constituição é a melhor expressão daquilo que é o povo, quando este se reconhece nela. Tratar da Constituição hegeliana, é tratar, portanto, do Estado, é tratar da conciliação da liberdade e da necessidade, da organização do todo diante da desorganização do Estado político histórico. O escopo deste artigo é apresentar a Doutrina do Direito de Kant, demonstrando os problemas que o formalismo gera. Será visto que o critério de justiça kantiano é a coexistência de liberdades com leis universais e que a injustiça caracteriza-se quando isso for impedido. Kant propõe princípios metafísicos ao direito, buscando assim realizar uma fundamentação moral do jurídico. Ele distingue as leis éticas das leis jurídicas e estabelece um fundamento comum para ambas: as leis morais. Assim, o direito possui uma (...) fundamentação moral. Todavia, isso é ignorado quando Kant trata do direito de necessidade e do direito de equidade. Segundo o autor, a coerção é necessária para o direito. Porém, há dois casos em que isso não ocorre: no direito de equidade e no direito de necessidade. Por que Kant não resolve o problema desses dois direitos a partir da fundamentação metafísica do direito? É possível uma teoria da justiça estritamente formal, nos moldes kantianos? O presente artigo defende que uma teoria da justiça formal é insuficiente. (shrink)

A teoria da justiça proposta por John Rawls investiga a estrutura básica da sociedade, tendo como base a justiça política, a justiça pública e a justiça distributiva. Rawls propõe uma teoria que representa uma alternativa ao utilitarismo, pois para o autor os direitos não deverão estar sujeitos à negociações políticas ou sujeitos ao cálculo de interesses sociais. Language is a cognitively demanding human trait, but it is also a fundamentally cooperative enterprise that rests on the motivation to share information. Great apes possess many of the cognitive prerequisites for language, but largely lack the motivation to share information. Callitrichids (including marmosets and tamarins) are highly vocal monkeys that are more distantly related to humans than great apes are, but like humans, they are cooperative breeders and all group members help raising offspring. Among primates, this rearing system is (...) correlated with proactive prosociality, which can be expressed as motivation to share information. We therefore propose that the unique coincidence of these two components in humans set the stage for language evolution: The cognitive component inherited from our great ape-like ancestors, and the motivational one added convergently as a result of cooperative breeding. We evaluate this scenario based on a review of callitrichd vocal communication and show that furthermore, they possess many of the mechanistic elements emphasized by the mirror system hypothesis of language evolution. We end by highlighting how more systematic phylogenetic comparisons will enable us to further promote our understanding of the role of cooperative breeding during language evolution. (shrink)
